Champions do not rest. They build.
Here is what some of whom that carry the Sun Devil legacy has to say.
Barry and Connie McNeill
“One thing that’s impressed us over the years is that the quality of students coming through the program is quite high,” said McNeill. “They have people in engineering, businesses, recreational science, etc., and they have good GPAs. We’ve got people with 4.0 GPAs in the finance program.”
John Ashton
“I know the cost of running athletic programs and what it takes to recruit great athletes. I was at a time (in my life) when I could contribute. I think this will help the Sun Devil Club to succeed under (vice president for athletics) Lisa Love.”
Brian Friedman
When Friedman entered the “working world” he felt “it was important to be involved in the community.” He’s been involved with a variety of organizations including the Sun Angel Advisory Council, the Sun Angel Foundation (now Sun Devil Club) and other nonprofits like Youth Evaluation and Treatment Centers and the Valley of the Sun United Way campaign through his employer, Bank of America.
Craig and Connie Weatherup Give Lead Gift For ASU Basketball Practice Facility
Craig Weatherup, ASU alumnus and past CEO of Pepsi Cola, and his wife, Connie, have given a lead gift of $5 million to ASU Intercollegiate Athletics to help ASU’s basketball programs play on a national stage. The Weatherups’ gift, given through the ASU Foundation, will name the new basketball practice facility at ASU.
Richard and Barbara Malone
In much the same way former major league baseball manager Tommy Lasorda said he bled Dodger blue, Richard and Barbara Malone bleed Arizona State maroon and gold. Both are natives of St. Louis. Rich graduated from TCU and Barb graduated from Fontbonne College in her hometown. But after relocating to Arizona, they “contracted” what Barb calls “Sun Devil fever.”
Joel and Marti Vandevoort
“If you want top-tier athletic programs at ASU, you’ve got to have the facilities to support what the programs need.” In retrospect, the Vandevoorts didn’t need much persuading when it came to doing something for college football, given their affinity for the sport.
Carl Touhey
What initially might have seemed like an innocuous e-mail lit a spark under Carl Touhey ’82, the owner of Bancap Self Storage Group Inc., in Redwood, Calif., which specializes in sales and acquisitions of self-storage properties. The e-mail mentioned the Fulton Challenge. Ira Fulton, a Phoenix home builder and philanthropist, was going to match donations to the athletic department with investments of his own.
Steve Dark
Since Steve Dark graduated from Arizona State in 1991, he isn’t exactly old enough to qualify for membership in AARP. But as long as he’s able to visit his alma mater, AARP membership will be lights years away.
