Continuing Mark's Impact
Sun Devil Hockey would not be where it is today without the contributions of those who paved the way on the ice, creating a foundation to build upon. One man who is credited with playing an integral role in this is Mark Parris.
Parris was a teammate of current head coach Greg Powers when the pair were students at Arizona State and was regarded as one of the lynchpins and leaders of the team.
Even after his time at ASU, Mark was one of the most involved as he closely tracked the programs progress from unknown club team to national club powerhouse to a Division I force to be reckoned with.
Unfortunately, Parris suffered from Sleep Apnea and passed away in his sleep on October 29, 2018. He was just 44.
Immediately after his passing, the Mark Parris Scholarship Endowment for Sun Devil Hockey was established by Greg Powers so that his legacy could live on in perpetuity.
Since then, his sister, Kim Couture, as well as her co-chairs Duane Lewis and Eric Kilstrom have organized the Mark Parris Golf Tournament every year at Coyote Lakes Golf Club, Mark’s favorite course. The proceeds go directly to benefit his scholarship and functions as a touch point with the Sun Devil Hockey community every year.
The effort saw $21,229 raised in 2021 and with 96 golfers this year, is on pace to exceed that total this year. Along with closest to the pin contests and other fun elements, the tournament was attended by Sun Devil Hockey players Demetrios Koumontzis, Josh Doan, Jacob Semik and Chris Grando as well as coaches Eddie Lack and Alex Hicks.
