At the end of March, Sun Devil Athletics and the Sun Devil Club took part in a wonderful annual tradition. Nearly 400 people gathered in the San Tan Ford Club of Sun Devil Stadium to honor and celebrate the women of Sun Devil Athletics at the Wings of Gold Celebration presented by Valley Toyota Dealers.
The celebration was a night to remember, hosted by local newscaster and former ASU Cheerleader Lina Washington, there was a live performance by Sun Devil Women's Tennis's Chelsea Fontenel and on the night we worked together to raise more than $150,000 in support of women's athletics at ASU.
The night was highlighted by the recipients of the annual Heather Farr Award, Sun Devil Softball's Yanni Acuña and the Linda Vollstedt Coach of the Year Award, Sun Devil Soccer’s Graham Winkworth.
The Heather Farr Award, named for the Sun Devil Golf legend and sister of Sun Devil Women’s Golf head coach Missy Farr-Kaye, is awarded to the individual who best honors her legacy exemplifying what it means to be a great Sun Devil student-athlete.
Winkworth has been the face of Sun Devil Soccer since 2016. In that time, he has rebuilt one of the most consistent soccer programs in the conference, with an emphasis on developing his student-athletes and some recent postseason appearances to show for it.
Banquets like this are only made possible because of the generosity of Sun Devil Club donors and the supporters of Sun Devil Athletics. The 2024 celebration is already shaping up to be another one to remember.
