The saying goes that attitude reflects leadership. With that in mind, Sun Devil Football has had one of the best overall team “attitudes” not only in the Pac-12 but in the country of late. Due to a concerted effort by the players, administrators and spearheaded by interim head coach Sean Aguano, the boys seem to be having some fun again.
There is no greater proof than Sun Devil Football’s enthralling upset win over No. 21 Washington just a couple weeks ago. 14 point underdogs, the Sun Devils fought from start to finish to hand the Huskies a devastating road loss, seemingly reviving the season heading into the bye week.
But this goes far beyond the field of play. This upset began, it could be argued, rather pedestrianly, in a bowling alley. The program made minor news ahead of its matchup with Utah, announcing the return of the Devil Walk before the game, but again, it was something more than that.
It’s the effort to organize team outings to bowl, or team dinners on Sunday and bringing back the Devil Walk that have compounded to result in the culture – and by proxy – results change within Sun Devil Football. The players haven’t changed, simply the mindset and environment around them.
It is lining up to be an exciting finish to the season, words that could not have been uttered a month ago, but now there is a certain buzz around the facility: belief. As we prepare for the final six contests of the year, the ask of fans is simple: match that energy and commitment.
It would have been easy for the players to just roll over and mail it in for the rest of the season, but that’s not what they did, so neither should you. Support the team, watch them these next two weeks and then come family weekend, come out and cheer them on. If UCLA makes the mistake of overlooking these energized Sun Devils, they’ll suffer the same fate as the Huskies, and you won’t want to miss it.
